How to carry out basic due diligence in your job search and applications

There are many ways to review companies on the internet to get a better picture of current and past employee’s thoughts and feelings. You need to be satisfied you are joining a reputable organisation. If there are any doubts ask questions before even applying by talking to the contact listed on the job advert. Websites or tactics you can use to research a company include:

The Company Website: The best way to learn how a company wants to be perceived and what it considers most important is by examining its website. Take some time to read about their vision and values, and compare them to your own.

Google: This is the gateway to finding just about anything you’d like to know about a company, its competitors, and general online presence. Check through the news articles and use creative search strings to help you dig deeper.

Whirlpool: A very popular way for past and current employees to review an organisation, with very little censoring

Glassdoor: In addition to reviews, Glassdoor displays approximate salaries, company interview questions, and other job opportunities.

Social Media Networks: The most influential professional network is LinkedIn. Use it to see if anyone in your network has a connection within the organization you are considering. Examining how a company interacts socially on Facebook and Twitter can also clue you into its culture.

Please note, that when reviewing these sites that companies do change and act upon the feedback so don’t just assume a few bad reviews means a terrible business to work for, if you have any doubts ask to meet the current employees before you commit to starting to get a sense of the current culture.

The Job advert

A job advert is a sales pitch to attract the best and widest possible applicants, but this also means you need to read between the lines and ask key questions when considering applying. You need to pay attention to the phrasing, wording and overall tone of the advert to help you make the right choices.

The environment – Words are often used such as “fast-paced” or “dynamic” can refer to a busy or chaotic environment. “High Intensity” or “lively” environment can refer to a place of work in which you are consistently challenged.

The ideal candidate – “high achiever” or “driven” sounds impressive but can be translated to, happy to work all the hours required or push through to achieve extremely high targets. “Strong communicator” or “excellent interpersonal skills” can mean you will be dealing with tricky or awkward customers or internal stakeholders.

The best advice is to ask questions, if you can, at the start to really get a sense of what the job entails and what you are stepping into before applying.

Company Overview
