What persuaded you to work for Bank of America?

The sheer scale and global presence of Bank of America initially attracted me to pursuing a role here. As a student studying finance I applied for an internship opportunity within Global Markets and throughout my summer working at the desk was impressed by the responsibility I was afforded and the firm’s interest in my development. After completing my internship I could not wait to begin my career with Bank of America.

How would you describe your job to a friend?

In my role we help government, financial and corporate clients raise debt (bonds) in offshore and domestic markets. I have worked across a range of different transactions/structures that have helped clients in all sectors raise debt in a variety of currencies, typically to fund ongoing activities or acquisitions.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

In my role, particularly in the current market environment, no day is ever the same. Markets have always interested me and a role in debt capital markets provides an attractive mix of the fast-paced environment associated with Global Markets, as well as the opportunity to work across long-term transactions for an extremely diverse client set.

I work with colleagues across Asia, Europe and the U.S. and that is part of the reason working at a truly global company like Bank of America is so exciting.

In one word, how would you describe Bank of America?

Innovative.

What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?

It is always rewarding to work on a transaction, seeing it through from inception to pricing in the market months later, and I enjoy working in a team to help find high quality solutions for clients. Away from my role specifically, I sit on the LGBT Pride Australia Committee and have been fortunate enough to attend many industry events and volunteer for numerous related charities to promote support for the community.

Do you work in a global team?

Debt capital markets is a global business by nature. Every day I work with colleagues in our offices across Asia, Europe and the U.S. and that is part of the reason working at a truly global company like Bank of America is so exciting. Training programs offered to analysts and associates provided me with a great opportunity to build relationships with colleagues offshore, who I work with on a regular basis.

What advice would you give to students?

Any internship or graduate program you secure provides an invaluable learning opportunity. The learning curve is very steep but be proactive, ask questions, network, and try to add value in any way you can. Looking back on my time as a graduate I’m amazed at how much I learned in a relatively short period of time.

My advice for students is to put yourselves out there and maximize every learning opportunity – say yes to opportunities even if you think you’re not ready for them. From a personal development perspective, you need to be challenged to ensure that you can evolve.

It’s important to try and gain a well-rounded and practical experience through internships, work experience, and extracurricular activities in order to understand what you like and enjoy.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Markets are constantly changing so you get the opportunity to experience a high level of challenge and excitement in your day-to-day. It is exciting to provide access to flow and investment solutions to key clients – and it is extremely rewarding to see the BofA Global Markets franchise grow on the back of your decisions and actions. It’s very rare that you get to start your career in an organization where you have a direct input in the growth of the entire business and take on real responsibilities from day one.

How does the bank support your development?

There is a huge emphasis on ongoing training and professional development as there is so much to learn! You will have access to formalized training programs and on-the desk learning. You will learn everything you want to know about macro & micro-economic markets with daily exposure to building your interpersonal, technical, analytical and advisory skills.
